Fluxes for foundry. Fluxing agents
The essence of the process of flux refining of aluminum alloys is in
processing of the melt with liquid chloride or chloride-fluoride flux. Due
to differences in the wettability of the contacting phases non-metallic
inclusions spontaneously transform from metal into flux. Also during
interaction of melt fluxes with the aluminum exchange reactions develop
that lead to oxidation of impurities and their subsequent disposal along
with the slag. In some conditions for the reactions of aluminum
with fluoride and chloride the formation of subfluoride subchloride and
aluminum may occur.
The physical and chemical properties of flux have decisive influence on the efficiency of the process. But the degree of purification of the melt inclusions and metallic impurities is largely determined by diversity of technological conditions of refining. These include the time of contact with the metal flux, the specific surface area of interaction (contact area), the intensity of mixing of metal and flux, the specific use of flux. Therefore, improvement of technology of flux processing of aluminum alloys is not only towards improvement of physical and chemical (mostly refining) properties of flux but also by the intensification of the processes by means of various techniques and devices.
A variety of compositions of fluxes is due to their multi-purpose and a wide variety of compositions of aluminum alloys. Fluxes are distinguished by the value of the covering (for protection against oxidation of alloy during melting), fluxes for the processing of scrap and slag, refining, modifying and fluxes for special purposes, such as lining for protection against the ingress of aluminum alloys and cleaning of the lining or the accretion fluxes for doping.
Despite the variety of fluxes, a small number of halogen compounds of chlorides and fluorides of various metals are introduced in their composition. As a rule, the basis of fluxes are chlorides of alkali and alkaline earth metals (into which simple addition of fluorides of alkali and alkaline earth metals are introduced), aluminum fluoride and sodium and potassium cryolites, silicon fluorides or fluoride salts of some transition metals.
