Tungsten (wolfram) electrodes

Tungsten (wolfram) electrode is a welding electrode for use in an argon-arc welding of metals and alloys.  Tungsten (wolfram) is the most refractory of the known metals.  Its melting point is 3,410° C, the boiling temperature is 10,220 centigrees, its density is 19.3 g/cm ³.  Wolfram maintains its strength even when heated red.  Consumption of tungsten (wolfram) during welding is small (a few hundredths of a gram per 1 m of the weld), and tungsten electrodes doped with rare earth oxides are even more endurant.  Currently tungsten (wolfram) electrodes with a wide range of chemical compositions are available.  To improve the welding and technological properties oxides of various rare-earth metals like cerium, lanthanum, yttrium, thorium and zirconium are introduced into the pure wolfram.

The most widely-used are tungsten (wolfram) rods, since they first showed significant advantages of composite electrodes over pure tungsten (wolfram) when welding with direct current.

However, thorium is a low radioactive material and it is necessary for security purposes to equip the place of works with local ventilation.  Thoriated electrodes work well when welding with direct current and improved sources of electrical current, at the same time, depending on the task the sharpening angle of the electrode can be changed.

Thoriated electrodes retain their shape well at high welding electrical currents, even when pure tungsten (wolfram) electrode melts forming a spherical surface at the end of the rod.

image002 WL-15

Universal lanthanum tungsten (wolfram) electrodes, for welding all types of steels and alloys on alternating and direct current (AC / DC) WL-15.

The electrodes of tungsten oxide and lanthanum alloy have very easy initial launch of the arc, a low tendency to burn-through, stable arc characteristics and excellent re-ignition of the arc.

Adding 1.5% lanthanum oxide increases the maximum current carrying capacity of the electrode by about 50% more for a given size when welding with alternating current than pure tungsten. Compared to the cerium and thorium, lanthanum electrodes have less wear of the working end of the electrode.

Lanthanum electrodes are more durable and pollute the tungsten weld less.  Lanthanum oxide is uniformly distributed along the length of the electrode, which allows to keep the original grinding of the electrodes for longer time.  This is a significant advantage when welding steels and stainless steels at a constant (straight polarity) or alternating current from an improved source of welding current.  When welding with alternating sinusoidal current working end of the electrode must have a spherical shape.
